Jack’s used to outsource most of the baked goods offered at the cafe, but with the opening of a new location at 10 Downing, they’re taking everything indoors…and vegan. Think hearty slices of Pumpkin-Cranberry Bread, and muffins in a rotation of flavors like Brown Rice Bran and Lemon-Almond-Poppy. There are even Apple Walnut Scones, but I’m a doughnut girl at heart. Baked Apple Cider Doughnuts are front and center in the display case, deep golden in color, simultaneously cake-like and fluffy, dusted in sugar. While they aren’t my favorite vegan doughnuts in the city, they’re respectable in their own right.
If you’re looking to warm up with something hot that’s different from the usual cup of tea/coffee, try the Sweet Mary. It’s chamomile infused into hot soy milk, then sweetened with a touch of honey and cinnamon.
