It’s happening at Big Gay Ice Cream’s second brick and mortar store, located on the corner of Grove Street and 7th Avenue in the West Village. This isn’t their first collaborative rodeo: The scoop shop—known for flavors like The Mermaid (vanilla ice cream, key lime curd, crushed graham crackers, and whipped cream)—has been serving Fany’s Mexican paletas, including a specially made rainbow popsicle, since 2011. But when BGIC owners Douglas Quint and Bryan Petroff decided they’d like to expand their shop’s offerings to include breakfast pastries, they knew who to turn to.

Luckily the three have been friends for a long time, and they clearly share the same enthusiasm for discussing flavors and developing recipes. After teaming up last year at the South Beach Food and Wine Festival, they started brainstorming pastry recipes. The result? Guava and cream cheese empanadas. A dulce de leche and almond doughnut. Flakey cinnamon sugar mariposa cookies.
“These aren’t a saturation of the same thing, but unique offerings,” explains Bryan.
The shop will open at 7 a.m. on weekdays to catch the crowd of customers on their way to work. “When we were working on the space we realized we were near so many subways. People would walk by and go to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts. Why go to a chain when we could offer a better product?” Of course pastries need coffee, so Doug worked with The Roasting Plant to make an exclusive BGIC blend.
The shop will offer a seasonal selection of Fany’s pastries, including doughnuts, sweet and eventually savory empanadas, puff pastry “piggies”, cookies, and more. Click through the slideshow above to see all of the breakfast sweets at Big Gay Ice Cream.
